As my son moved through first to third grade, he built a strong reading foundation—sounding out words, reading fluently, and picking up vocabulary. Now, entering fourth grade, the focus is shifting. He’s no longer just learning to read—he’s reading to learn.
Books now come with tougher words, more complex plots, and fewer pictures. They’re helping him think deeper, follow layered stories, and connect with bigger themes like friendship and family.
I’ve put together ten chapter books that my son really enjoyed. They’re great if your child isn’t into Roald Dahl or Unicorn Academy, or if you’re just looking for something fresh. Some have been made into shows or movies, some are part of a series, and all are engaging reads I think your child will love too.
A list of recommended books for third grade can be found here.

Total 7 Books – ATOS 3.9 – 4.1
With a larger font and just a little over 100 pages per book, this fictional series is a great choice for young readers ready to step up from third grade. Key Hunters follows two main characters, Cleo and Evan, who are transported into a magical world of books to solve mysteries and rescue their librarian—trapped by an evil villain.
Each book takes them into a new story with a different theme, time, and place—from gadget-packed spy missions and fang-flashing werewolves to the sinking Titanic and dragon-filled kingdoms. Every adventure brings fresh challenges they must overcome before time runs out.
Perfect for kids who love variety, Key Hunters is an exciting way to explore multiple genres all within one thrilling series.
2. Erec Rex by Kara Kingsley
Total 5 Books – ATOS 3.9 – 4.3
For readers craving a magical realm filled with mystical creatures, clever games, and surprising rules, Kara Kingsley’s Erec Rex series is a must-read. It follows Erec, an ordinary boy whose world turns upside down when his adoptive mother mysteriously disappears. His search for her leads him into a hidden realm where he must complete twelve dangerous tasks to become the next ruler of one of the magical kingdoms—all to save his mother and the realm itself.
Packed with magic, trickery, friendship, bullies, and unexpected twists, the series slowly unravels the mystery of Erec’s true identity. While the first three books average around 300 pages, the final two—The Three Furies and The Secret of Ashona—top 500 pages each. Don’t let the length scare you off: the fast-paced storytelling and rich detail will keep readers hooked from start to finish.
3. The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi & Holly Black
Total 8 Books – ATOS 3.9 – 4.4
The Spiderwick Chronicles follows the adventures of three siblings—Jared, Simon, and Mallory—after they move into the mysterious Spiderwick estate and stumble upon a hidden world of fairies. As they come to terms with this magical reality, they must protect The Field Guide, a book filled with secrets about the many fairy creatures living in the nearby forests. But danger looms as goblins, led by the ogre Malgarath, are after the guide.
This fantasy series is a joy to read, blending magic with the everyday world in a way that feels both thrilling and believable. The only way to see the fairies is with a Seeing Stone—or, amusingly, by having a hogsqueal spit in your eyes!
The original series includes five books, each just over 100 pages—perfect for young readers ready for fast-paced, exciting chapter books. And when your kids finish those, there’s more to explore: Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles continues the adventure with new characters and settings in the same enchanting world.
4. Stick Dog by Tom Watson
Total 12 Books – ATOS 4.1 – 4.6
Have you ever seen the sparkle in a dog’s eyes when they spot food? Now imagine the wild tricks they’d try just to get a taste of those irresistible human treats. That’s exactly what you’ll find in the Stick Dog series! Meet Stick Dog—a clever stray with a nose for snacks—who leads his lovable gang of dogs on hilarious missions for pizza, donuts, ice cream, spaghetti, and anything else they can sniff out.
With simple stick-figure-style illustrations and laugh-out-loud storytelling, these books are as fun to look at as they are to read. Beyond the humor, the series highlights friendship, teamwork, and determination (especially when food is involved!). It’s the perfect pick for young readers looking for something funny, fast-paced, and full of heart.

5. Original Adventure of Hank The Cowdog by John R. Erickson
Total 79 Books – ATOS 3.6 – 4.8
To my surprise, my son took a real interest in this four-decade-old series—and he’s already read several books from it! First published in 1982, Hank the Cowdog is still going strong with over 79 titles, each around 100 pages and sprinkled with simple black-and-white illustrations.
The series follows Hank, a self-appointed “Head of Ranch Security,” as he tackles mysteries and misadventures on a lively Texas ranch. Alongside his “useless” but lovable assistant, Drover, Hank’s perspective brings laugh-out-loud moments, clever twists, and just the right dose of chaos.
Told in Hank’s voice—a mix of confidence and confusion—the stories are packed with humor and charm that appeal to both kids and adults. Whether you’re reading them aloud or handing them off to a young independent reader, these books are a fun and entertaining ride.
6. The Last Kids On Earth by Max Brallier
Total 9 Books – ATOS 3.9 – 4.7
If your kids are into spooky zombies and world-destroying monsters, then this series is a must-read. The Last Kids on Earth follows Jack Sullivan and his best friends as they try to survive a monster apocalypse—living in a tricked-out treehouse, playing video games, and eating tons of junk food along the way.
Despite the blood-hungry zombies, the stories are surprisingly hilarious and full of over-the-top fun. I mean, who plays video games with flesh-craving creatures lurking outside? But under all the action and laughs, there’s a strong message about friendship, bravery, and sticking together no matter what.
The series includes 9 main books plus 4 standalone stories. If your kids loved Eerie Elementary or Notebook of Doom, this is the leveled-up adventure they won’t want to put down.
7. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
Total 6 Books – ATOS 4.2 – 5.1
This well-known classic, a personal favorite of mine, is based on a fascinating world of Greek mythology set in the 21st century. The series centers around Percy Jackson, a troubled 12-year-old who discovers he’s a demigod and the son of Poseidon. Alongside his friends, Percy navigates the challenges of being a demigod and strives to prevent catastrophic events in both the mortal and immortal realms. Comprising six books, each averaging 350–400 pages with no illustrations, the series boasts a captivating storyline. It’s the perfect addition for those intrigued by Greek mythology or anyone seeking fast-paced fantasy books.
8. The 39 Clues by Rick Riordan
Total 5 Series – 11 Books In First Series – ATOS 4 – 5.3
If you’re searching for an extensive book series with a complex storyline filled with ongoing suspense and mysteries, you can’t miss The 39 Clues. Written by a collaboration of various authors, this interactive series invites readers to join the characters in following clues and piecing together puzzles. The story revolves around two siblings, Amy and Dan Cahill, as they embark on adventures around the globe to uncover the 39 clues that hold the key to their family’s power—and the secret behind their influence throughout history. Start the journey with the first series, The Clue Hunt, and continue the adventure through four spin-off series: Cahills vs. Vespers, Unstoppable, Doublecross, and Outbreak.
9. The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland & Kari H. Sutherland
Total 3 Books – ATOS 4.6 – 5.2
For fans of The Spiderwick Chronicles and Wings of Fire, this series is a must-read. Written by Wings of Fire author Tui T. Sutherland, along with co-author Kati H. Sutherland, The Menagerie trilogy transports readers into a magical world filled with unicorns, dragons, phoenixes, and other mythical creatures. The story begins with Logan, a 13-year-old boy whose life takes a magical turn after discovering a lost griffin cub in his bedroom. Teaming up with his friends, Zoe and Blue, they race against time to find the rest of the griffins before something terrible happens—and to restore order to the Menagerie, a top-secret facility Zoe’s family has guarded for generations. The authors do a fantastic job of bringing the mythical creatures to life with vivid descriptions that spark the imagination. Despite being around 300 pages each, these books are fast-paced and easy to dive into.
10. LEGO Ninjago Series by various authors
Total 15 Books – ATOS 3.6 – 5.2

For LEGO Ninjago enthusiasts, this series of 15 chapter books is a fantastic reading choice. Each story explores the expansive Ninjago universe, packed with action and adventure featuring the beloved characters. My son loves this series! One downside, however, is that the books aren’t available as a complete set—they’re only sold individually across various book-selling websites. Many of the ones we found came from our local library or the school library. The stories aren’t sequentially connected, so whichever book you manage to find will be just as exciting as the rest.
